Happy Thanksgiving! As we all pause to celebrate the classic American holiday of gratitude, on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we’re serving up an extra helping of some of the most unforgettable interviews we’ve had the privilege to air over the past 14 years of weekly broadcasts.
When Madeleine Albright, US Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton, joined Rev. Welton Gaddy, host of State of Belief, in May of 2006, she had just published her second book. It was titled The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs, and the first-hand observations of the interplay of these that Sec. Albright offered are well worth listening to again.
We devote the rest of this week’s best-of State of Belief program to a critically important panel discussion Welton hosted in 2006. While we regularly cover the political religious right takeover of our politics and our government, the fact that a concerted, long-term attempt to infiltrate and fundamentally alter the workings of many leading mainstream denominations in this country is harder to quantify – and tricky to discuss. Welton brought together three faith leaders who spoke articulately to this campaign, which continues to this day: The Rev. Dr. Bruce Prescott, the late Rev. Dr. Andrew Weaver, and the Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, who currently serves as ninth General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ.
