As we take a post-July 4th break, we’re revisiting some of our favorite conversations from the earliest years of State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast.
We’ll revisit a conversation with Kevin Phillips, author of American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century.
It’s as timely today as it was in 2006 when Welton first interviewed Dr. Obrey Hendricks, author of The Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Nature of Jesus’ Teachings and How They Have Been Corrupted.
A lot of the guests we’ve featured over the past 15 years have advanced professionally; some have evolved in their convictions. A few have retired. But a handful remain right where we found them, and that includes the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, who spoke to Welton in 2006 in his role as President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. As the influence of this community continues to grow in both politics and organised religion, we’ll get a snapshot of what the priorities were a decade and a half ago.
University of Chicago Professor Martha Nussbaum had just published a book in 2008 titled, Liberty of Conscience: In Defense of America’s Tradition of Religious Equality, which demanded that Welton welcome the esteemed scholar to State of Belief Radio.
