True religious freedom means that all of us should be free to make healthcare decisions based on our own beliefs and circumstances – not the religious views of our bosses, doctors, or elected officials. But recent anti-choice legislation in Texas prevents millions of people from exercising this right. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we will discuss the faith leaders at the forefront of the fight for reproductive rights.
Dissent has been a part of organized religion’s historical tapestry for centuries. Father Charles Curran, professor of Human Values at Southern Methodist University and author of Loyal Dissent, is back on the show this week for part two of his conversation with Rev. Welton Gaddy, host of State of Belief, on dissent in the Catholic church.
Reproductive freedom is a matter of religious freedom. Following the passage of the draconian SB 8 in Texas, which essentially bans abortions for the majority of people in the state, the Texas Freedom Network is working overtime to protect the bodily autonomy of Texans. Welton will sit down with The Rev. Angela Williams, senior outreach and faith coordinator at TFN, to discuss her work organizing people of faith in support of reproductive justice.
On Saturday, October 2nd, the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding – a longtime friend of State of Belief – is hosting its annual banquet and will present its prestigious Young Scholar Award. Dr. Samah Choudhury is this year’s recipient, and joins Welton to discuss her work “What Makes Humor Muslim?”
