These past few weeks have been very difficult for those of us who promote an inclusive vision of religious freedom. The Supreme Court continues to demolish reproductive choice and church-state separation, and Christian nationalist rhetoric continues to pop up on the campaign trail. Now more than ever, we need courageous leadership and solidarity among Americans of all faiths and none to protect our most cherished values. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we’ll hear from two very different voices about the corrosive influence of the Religious Right.
As we’ve said time and time again here on State of Belief, the idea that efforts to tear down church-state separation is a “win” for religious Americans is a myth. In reality, the vast majority of people of faith know that protecting the boundary between religion and government is necessary to protect faith and freedom in the United States. Even former leaders within the Religious Right know that religious extremists have gone too far. One of those leaders, Rev. Rob Schenck, will sit down with Alliance President Emeritus Rabbi Jack Moline, filling for State of Belief host Rev. Welton Gaddy, to discuss his political transformation, and how the influence of the Religious Right has been elevated by the Supreme Court.
As the future of true religious freedom and democracy hangs in the balance, it’s an exciting and vital moment for our mission here at Interfaith Alliance. As we look to the future, we’re thrilled to introduce our new president and CEO: The Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, a longtime leader in the interfaith movement for justice. Paul will take up his position in September. This week, you’ll hear Paul in conversation with Jack about his past advocacy and the many challenges that lie ahead when he takes up the mantle in September.
